A Dozen Ways to Energize and Boost Your Health

1. Prioritize Beauty Sleep

Good health begins with quality sleep, often called "beauty sleep." It’s essential to get restorative sleep before midnight, as this sets the stage for your body’s crucial healing processes. As we age, the importance of beauty sleep only increases, significantly impacting overall well-being.

Research from NASA shows that our bodies can adjust by about one hour in either direction over 24 hours. Most people need around eight hours of sleep each night. Irregular sleep patterns, such as staying up late on weekends or pulling all-nighters, can throw off your rhythm and take days to recover from.

Lack of sleep doesn’t just make you tired; it affects learning, mood, and your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to illness. Also, lack of sleep can slow muscle repair, impact cortisol control, inslulin sensativity,  and increase fat storage.  Quality rest truly is the foundation of good health.

2. Embrace Nutrient-Dense Eating

As late autumn brings cooler weather, our nutritional needs change. We naturally crave warm, wholesome meals that sustain energy. Focus on high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats to stabilize blood sugar and promote lasting energy.

Polyphenol-rich foods, like dark berries, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices, and also support gut and immune health.

If you have picky eaters, involve your children in food preparation. They’ll be more likely to try new foods when they’ve helped make them! Create family-favorite options such as salad bars, potato bars, taco bars, or sheet-pan dinners. These “build-your-own” meals make healthy eating fun and flexible.

3. Hydrate for Energy Boost

Even when it’s cold outside, your body still needs plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps eliminate waste, remove toxins, and fuel every system in your body.

If your water doesn’t taste great, try a filter or add a slice of lemon. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you’re well hydrated! If you increase your hydration, keep your eye on your electrolytes. Eating cucumber may help!

4. Immerse Yourself in the Outdoors

Fresh air and sunshine can work wonders for your mood and energy. Spending time outside improves sleep, boosts your immune system, and helps ward off the “winter blues,” aka, "Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)."

If you live in a northern area or have darker skin, you may not make enough vitamin D3 in winter. Try to get unfiltered sunlight between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. during sunnier months to build reserves. Even in cold weather, bundle up and step out for a few minutes of fresh air, it makes a difference! When enhancing vitamin D3, make sure to get K2 and magnesium. Vitamin K2 helps drive bone density, driving calcium from the blood, into the bones. Magnesium is needed in over 350 metabolic process, including helping vitamin D3.

Step outside at sunrise and sunset and aborb the infrared light. This can stimulate stem cell production in your eyes. Infrared light also helps regulate the cortisol cycle of your circadian rythyms. This can improve sleep!

Even in winter, bundle up and step outside during midday to enjoy the transformative effects of nature.

5. Keep Your Body in Motion

Movement can rev up your metabolism and renew your energy. Gentle stretches in the morning, brisk walks in the afternoon, or short “movement breaks” throughout the day can refresh both mind and body.

Encourage your children to move too! Regular physical activity supports physical health, mental clarity,, emotional balance, and self regulation.

6. Cultivate Deep Breathing

Deep breathing sends oxygen to every cell in your body, reducing stress and increasing energy. Deliberately practice slow, deep breaths, fully exhaling stale air, to experience its calming effects.

7. Harness the Power of Laughter

Laughter is a natural stress reliever. Create a "Laugh Book" filled with jokes and funny stories, and make time to laugh daily for a boost in mood and energy.

8.  Revitalize with a Detox Bath

Indulge in a detox bath using Epsom salts, which supply magnesium and aid in detoxification. Add ginger, cinnamon, or essential oils for added benefits, but use caution to avoid slipping. A soothing soak can leave you feeling refreshed and renewed.

9. Simplify Your Schedule

Over-scheduling can heighten stress. Reflect on your commitments and consider scaling back to focus on what truly matters. Opt for unstructured play at the park with your kids instead of organized activities to reduce stress and foster creativity.

10. Delight in Pleasurable Activities

Take time for activities you enjoy. Whether it’s reading, crafting, or spending time with friends, engaging in pleasurable pursuits helps combat stress and rejuvenates your spirit.

11. Foster a Tranquil Time

Establish a daily quiet time for both you and your children. This practice allows for restful activities and provides you with a chance to recharge, whether through a short nap, reading, or a favorite hobby.

12. Maintain a Gratitude Journal

In stressful times, shift your focus by counting your blessings. Keep a gratitude journal to document God’s work in your life and uplift your heart.
