The Charlotte Mason Gift of Writing - Part 1

"Gift of Narration"

What is the most natural and effective way to encourage children to write? Charlotte Mason said, "Composition is as natural as jumping or running to children who have been allowed due use of books. They should narrate in the first place, and they will compose, later, readily enough..." We'll explore the gift of narration in this multi-media presentation and show how narration provides a strong foundation for writing across the curriculum.

The Charlotte Mason The Gift of Writing - Part 2

"The Gift of Copywork, Dictation, and Mentor Texts"

Oral narration is the first step in learning to write. In conjunction, other powerful tools to develop the gift of writing are copywork (also known as transcription) and dictation. Both activities involve using mentor texts. We will also explore other ways of using mentor texts to learn grammar and to develop more interesting and complex writing skills. A free PDF of “Sentences of the Week” will be available; it illustrates using sentences from literature (mentor texts) to teach grammar. These sentences may also be used for copywork and dictation.

Charlotte Mason The Gift of Writing - Part 3

"The Gift of Beautiful Handwriting and Italics"

Charlotte Mason wrote, “I heard of…a ‘system of beautiful handwriting’ which … is pleasant to acquire because it is beautiful to behold.” (Home Education, p. 235-236) She was referring to italic handwriting. This is a hands-on class; come prepared with lined paper and a pencil to learn how to write using italics. Italics is a great choice for young children just learning to form letters and for older children who may not have legible handwriting.

The Charlotte Mason Gift of the Early Years

"The Gift of the Early Years"

The first six years of life sets the foundation for the rest of a child's life -- success and happiness are largely dependent on the habits and skills learned in this formative time. But why is this period so important for the rest of life?  And what do children actually need from adults during this crucial stage?

In this session we'll explore what Charlotte Mason advised for the early years, how this is supported by current research on childhood development, and the three most important things parents should focus on during this foundational stage of life.

The Charlotte Mason Gift of Education for All Abilities

"Charlotte Mason Education is for Teaching Children of All Abilities"

My child has a learning disability. Can I still apply Charlotte Mason's methods?

How do I have a peaceful homeschool when my child's challenges create so much tension? Because her philosophy is largely based on self-education, Charlotte Mason believed that her educational methods were for children of all abilities. With more and more children being diagnosed with learning disabilities it's more important than ever to empower parents with the knowledge of how to connect with and teach their children. In his session we'll talk about how Charlotte Mason's philosophy makes her methods ideal for children with special needs, and how you can meet your child where he's at and provide a feast of living ideas.

Charlotte Mason The Gift of Accountability

"How to Transcript a Charlotte Mason Education"

When grade levels are replaced with a natural or mastery approach, it can often be confusing to understand how to organize the records and all of the wonderful things that your child accomplishes. The time to think about the end goal (finishing the high school years), is not at the end, it is at the beginning.  In this session, you will learn what an official transcript is and why you need to start one earlier than high school (particularly if your child is not going to college). And we will walk through course titling, what belongs on a transcript and what does not belong there, how to record early high school level work and early college credits, and how to leverage a transcript for a middle school child who is labeled "behind".

"Spreading the Banquet Feast of Learning"

Miss Mason taught that lessons should be short and varied. Here we will explore how Charlotte Mason taught a variety of subjects, how to balance it all, and still have a generous amount of time for outdoor life, handcrafts, and mother culture.
